First Visit Toolkit

Phrases you can read off this page — or your phone — if you tend to freeze in the exam room.

Your Opening Line
“I’ve noticed a number of changes that I think might be related to perimenopause. I’ve put together a list — can I run through it with you?”
If They Say “Your Labs Are Normal”
“I understand the results are within reference ranges. But I’ve read that perimenopause is diagnosed clinically — based on symptoms and history, not on a single test. Do my symptoms fit that picture?”
If They Say “You’re Too Young”
“I’ve read that perimenopause can start in the late thirties to mid-forties. Could we consider this as one possible explanation for my symptoms?”
If They Suggest an Antidepressant Without Discussion
“I’m open to any treatment that helps. But before we decide, I’d like to explore whether my symptoms might be connected to hormonal changes. Can we look at all the options?”
If You Feel Unheard
“I hear your perspective. But these symptoms are seriously affecting my life, and I need to find the cause. Can we come up with a plan — what other tests to run, which specialist to see?”
A second opinion is not a tantrum. It’s a normal part of medicine.
